AUGUSTS DOMBROVSKIS 9TH INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR
YOUNG VIOLINISTS, VIOLISTS AND CELLISTS

Riga, from the 26th of November to 3rd of December 2017

The beginnings of the young musicians’ competition for cellists, violists and violinists, named after the noted Latvian entrepreneur, patron and master violin-maker Augusts Dombrovskis, are to be found in 1997, when the music school in Vecmīlgrāvis, a neighbourhood of Riga where Augusts Dombrovskis lived and worked, for the first time organised an international competition.
The competition plays an important role in the music life of Latvia. For several young musicians, it has served as a springboard to enter larger international music forums and represent Latvia on the world’s music scene.
For young foreign musicians, participation in the competition provides an opportunity to visit Latvia, a country that has brought up many world-famous musicians and performers. They can also learn more about Latvian music by performing new compositions of Latvian composers, commissioned specially for the competition.
Augusts Dombrovskis (1845-1927) is a legendary person in the history of Latvia. Owing to his steadfast will power, hard work and perseverance, he overcame the poverty and turned into a wealthy entrepreneur. In the beginning of the 20th century Augusts Dombrovskis became an outstanding patron and supporter of culture. His most significant achievement is the beautiful Culture Palace “Ziemeļblāzma”, an Art Nouveau building built in 1913 and dedicated to arts, allowing everyone to enjoy the splendour and diversity of culture.

Possessing a great passion for music, he is considered as one of the first Latvian masters who excelled in making violins and other string instruments. Nowadays, an international competition for young string instrument players, named after Augusts Dombrovskis, is established to pay tribute to this extraordinary personality. In the end of 2017 the 9th International Competition for young cellists, violists and violinists will take place.
